Dear Henrietta,
I have a secret that I’m afraid to tell anyone else because I think it might sound silly: I want to be an actor. Right now I am a successful attorney in downtown New Bern, specializing in tax law, but my job doesn’t allow me to be particularly creative. How can I begin to pursue my dream?
Signed,
Desperate for Drama
Dear Desperate for Drama,
Well this is easy! Get involved in community theatre!
There are actually two community theatres in New Bern: New Bern Civic Theatre and Rivertowne Players. Each of the theatres have busy production schedules, with auditions about once a month for upcoming shows. The theatres feature both musicals and plays, and bring in capable local directors. To your advantage, you don’t need experience as an actor to become active in community theatre—you just learn as you go along. Auditions are posted on each community theatre website: newberncivictheatre.org and rivertowneplayers.org. Just research the upcoming shows and find something that you think would interest you, then summon up your courage and get out there and give it a try!
I hope this helps and remember: summer is the time for trying new things!
Love,
Henrietta
