Dear Henrietta,

The New Year is coming and I just feel so LOST.  My friends are fixating on their resolutions:  lose weight, join a gym, quit drinking.  None of those options feel fulfilling to me.  I feel like I’ve lost connection with who I am and what I used to love.  How do I use the New Year to get back on track?

Signed,

Desperately Seeking Direction

Dear Desperately Seeking Direction,

For starters, a resolution doesn’t have to be about trying to make your body perfect, in order to fit a societal ideal.  Your resolution can be whatever you want it to be.

So, you say you’ve lost track of what you love?  Then let’s start by making a list of what you think that you’ve lost.

• Reflect back on your life and make a list of what has remained undone or unfulfilled in your mind.  Is there a particular skill, adventure or challenge?

• Again, reflect and remember times in your life that you were engaging in things that gave you joy and sparked passion in your life.  Were you engaging in creative activities?  Traveling? Spending more time with friends or family?

• Seek out a counselor, close friend or mentor to help guide you on a new path of discovery.  Be open to new experiences and ideas.

So there you are!  Problem solved. I hope this helps, and have a Happy New Year!

Love,

Henrietta
