Craven Arts Council presents On Beauty: The Prophet an exhibition celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the publication of The Prophet, a book of 26 prose poetry fables, by displaying artwork inspired by the book. Craven Arts Council will host a reception on August 11 from 5-8pm.
On Beauty: The Prophet is an ekphrastic exhibition inspired by The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. The Prophet is one of the most famous and reprinted books of all time with over 11 million copies sold worldwide. The book contains 26 sections with each chapter touching on different subjects ranging from marriage, freedoms, crimes, friendship, pain and beauty. Gibran was influenced by his religion, Maronite as well as the Baha’i Faith, Islam and the mysticism of the Sufis. Gibran was also influenced by Arabic art, European Classicism, Romanticism, Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and modern symbolism and surrealism. Participating artists were tasked with creating work inspired by the poetry in The Prophet.
