The Importance of Being Earnest

March 22 @ 7:00 pm

March 22 & 23 • 7pm
March 24 • 2pm

Treat yourself to some classic fun with this outstanding comedy. The North Carolina History Theater will present Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. First performed in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest is a timeless classic loved by many as one of the funniest plays ever written, with dazzling, dizzying dialogue. The beguiling characters – Algernon and Jack, Cecily and Gwendolen, Lady Bracknell and Miss Prism – endure across time as some of the wittiest and silliest stage characters ever created.

Oscar Wilde’s witty comedy of manners and mistaken identity in 1890s England has entertained theater audiences throughout the years. Its high farce and brilliant dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest an enduringly popular play. In addition, it has captivated comedy filmmakers six times between 1932 and 2011.

Directed by Sue Baldwin, The Importance of Being Earnest promises to provide a lively evening full of classic entertainment. She invites all to come and enjoy. “I know you’ll have as much fun watching as we have had preparing this show.”

Sue Baldwin is well known and respected in the New Bern theater community. Audiences have enjoyed her humor and talent in virtually all the theaters in the area. She also served as a long-time director and actor for the New Bern Historical Society’s Ghostwalk. Last year she directed the NC History Theater’s very successful Arsenic and Old Lace.
