When Mike Hawkins purchased the old Maola Milk and Ice Cream building on 1402 N. Craven Street in 2017, it was a leap of faith. He didn’t exactly know what it was destined to become, but he couldn’t resist the beautiful riverfront property, the distinct character of the building, and the happy memories he had there as a little boy eating ice cream.
“Imagination is a great motivator,” says Hawkins. “I envision this space as having the ability to bring our community together and unify them in a positive, joyful atmosphere. I want people to feel uplifted when they come here.”
Today, the 15,000 square foot space with sprawling 24 foot ceilings, original distressed brick, and welcoming seating areas has been transformed into a performance and event space, capable of accommodating indoor groups for weddings, reunions, or theatre performances. The outdoor space has unlimited potential for concerts with huge audiences. “We are hoping to build a permanent stage right on the water so that the audience can watch concerts while also enjoying the view of the river.”
Hawkins has been collaborating with the White Umbrella Group and Chad Howard to bring in popular singers, such as Jo Dee Messina. Next up is Tracy Lawrence, Dillon Carmichael and local favorite Bryan Mayer on May 8th. “The Maola at Riverside Performance and Event Venue is the perfect space for a concert, either indoors or outdoors” says Chad Howard. “Mike Hawkins has taken an old factory and repurposed it, creating an urban chic style that is very appealing and uniquely industrial.”
In addition to large scale events, Hawkins and his family have used the space for smaller celebrations, such as their daughter’s wedding, and religious gatherings for their church. Although the venue is quite spacious, it still has intimacy and charm. And that is what he wants to share with the community.
Hawkins says, “It would be wonderful if someday this ‘uptown’ area could become as popular as downtown. I hope that our community will come experience the joyful ambiance of this special place.”
