The 5th Annual North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival will return to New Bern from Monday, May 12 through Sunday, May 18, 2025, bringing eight days of creativity, community, and culture. Showcasing 37 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists—both new juried participants and returning award-winners—the festival celebrates the art of painting outdoors, or en plein air, a French term meaning “open air.” Rooted in the traditions of Impressionist masters like Monet and Degas, plein air painting focuses on capturing fleeting light, mood, and atmosphere.

New Bern, the first capital of North Carolina and a town rich in Southern charm and history, serves as a perfect backdrop for this artistic celebration. Known as the “Capital of Love” for Nicholas Sparks fans, its historic district, riverfront views, and Tryon Palace offer irresistible subjects for painters. The surrounding towns of Beaufort—home to the North Carolina Maritime Museum—and Oriental—the sailing capital of North Carolina—also offer stunning venues, along with other scenic sites across Craven, Carteret, and Pamlico Counties.

Festival headquarters will be at the Historic New Bern Farmers Market, less than two blocks from Tryon Palace. The venue will host workshops, gallery talks, art sales, and demonstrations. New this year are exciting additions like daily Gallery Talks, musical evenings, a Sip & Sketch event, and an expanded youth program that includes 15 new sessions for homeschooled, high school, and after-school students.

Renowned artists Shanna Kunz and Phil Starke will lead workshops, sharing their expertise with aspiring painters. Starke, a member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America, brings a distinguished background to the festival.

Approximately 400 new paintings are expected to be created during the week, with artists competing for top honors, including the Best of Show Koffenberger Award. Attendees can meet artists in real time using a mobile app, attend pop-up exhibits, and enjoy interactive events like the Quick Paint competition for youth and amateurs.

Local residents will play an essential role by hosting artists, volunteering, and participating in the vibrant activities throughout the week. With its blend of art, community spirit, and scenic beauty, the North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival promises an unforgettable experience for artists and visitors alike.
