If you haven’t heard of “Outlander” yet, you will! A series of bestselling novels by Dr. Diana Gabaldon, and now a hit television series on Starz, “Outlander” follows the story of Claire and Jamie Fraser through their adventures in Scotland and North America. The characters make their way to North Carolina and eventually New Bern, where they visit Tryon Palace and important residents like Governors William Tryon and Josiah Martin!
Even before the series became an international success, some visitors came to Tryon Palace because of their love of Gabaldon’s series. We’ve been pretty lucky here at Tryon Palace, to have talented staff and volunteers who have put together two fantastic tours that link the characters’ visits to the real history and locations of our site. “Discovering Tryon Palace: Outlander in the Governor’s Palace” and “Discovering Tryon Palace: Outlander Hearth and Home” have been hugely successful tours in 2018 and 2019, frequently selling out. These tours allow us to offer something unique for an audience that is rapidly growing and excited for “Outlander” related opportunities.
The passion for “Outlander” does not seem to be slowing down any time soon, and we at Tryon Palace are honored to play a small part in the “Outlander Effect” that is sweeping Scotland, North Carolina, and the world!
