RiverTowne Players is one of two outstanding community theatres in New Bern, supporting a thriving arts community that provides enriching entertainment and quality performances. The theatre provides an opportunity for local actors, musicians, and artists to showcase their talents in the historic Masonic Theatre, located at 514 Hancock Street in downtown New Bern. It first opened in 1805, and served as the town’s foremost place for dramatic and musical entertainment.
At various times in history, it also served as an arsenal and a hospital, and is known for being the nation’s oldest continually operating theatre until it closed its doors in December 1974.
The theatre re-opened over 20 years ago as RiverTowne Players, and has been providing family entertainment for local audiences ever since.
Executive Board of Directors President Harry Fitzgerald says, “RiverTowne Players is dedicated to creating a space where local actors, musicians and artists can come together and create a quality theatre experience for New Bern. Many people, myself included, call RiverTowne home because of our dedicated work to provide quality entertainment fit for all ages. If you have never seen a RiverTowne show then you don’t know what you’re missing! Lucky for you, our 2025 Season is packed with popular and exciting shows that you are guaranteed to enjoy. See you at the theatre!”
RiverTowne Players is thrilled to announce its 2025 season, a captivating lineup of productions designed to entertain and inspire. With musicals that will have you tapping your feet and dramas that will tug at your heartstrings, there’s something for everyone at the historic Masonic Theatre in New Bern.
Board Member and Director John VanDyke says, “I’m excited about our 2025 Season because of the diversity we are offering. We will have lots of opportunities here to lift the spirits of our community while telling stories that evoke our humanity and remind us that we are all connected. It’s exactly what good theatre should be.”
Kelly Edwards, who also serves as a Board Member, says “I’m really excited about our 2025 season as a performer and as an English teacher. Something Rotten and Death of a Salesman align with my American Literature classes (I start off with Hamlet because I love it so much!) and the theme of the American Dream we discuss in class as well.”
Here’s what’s in store for the upcoming year:
Memphis (January–February 2025)
Kicking off the season is the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis. Set in the 1950s, this electrifying story follows Huey, a white DJ, and Felicia, a Black singer, as they push boundaries in the segregated South. Their love and ambition collide with societal prejudices in a tale filled with powerful music and an inspiring message.
Something Rotten! (April–May 2025)
Get ready to laugh out loud with Something Rotten!, a side-splitting musical comedy. Set in Renaissance England, the Bottom brothers are desperate to outshine William Shakespeare by creating the world’s first musical. Packed with hilarious dialogue, show-stopping numbers, and a love for all things theater, this production is a must-see.
Death of a Salesman (August 2025)
Arthur Miller’s iconic drama takes the stage in August. Death of a Salesman tells the poignant story of Willy Loman, a traveling salesman grappling with his fading dreams and strained family relationships. A powerful exploration of the human condition, this timeless play remains as relevant as ever.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (October 2025)
Perfect for all ages, this family-friendly musical brings Greg Heffley’s middle school misadventures to life. Based on the bestselling book series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is packed with humor and heart, making it an excellent outing for families and young audiences.
