Where are you from and how’d you end up living and working in eastern North Carolina?

I am from Pollocksville, North Carolina. I grew up in Jones County. My mother is a Jones County native. My father is a Craven County native.

Do you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?

I attended UNC Wilmington, where I received my Bachelor of Social Work degree. I attended the University of Georgia, where I received my Master of Social Work degree. While at UNC Wilmington, I would go work as an extra in films. Everything I have learned about film has been mentorships/relationships with peers who are currently making films. I also study a lot on my own.

You’re the writer, producer and director of your films, do you have a favorite role or part when creating your work, and why?

I am a writer, director, and producer. Writing is my passion. At UNC Wilmington, I explored creative writing courses here and there. It was always something I was interested in but I was a Social Work major. I mostly love writing. Recently, with filming the last project, I realized how much I also love directing.

Does your work have one central theme, or several themes?

Several themes- I like to tell authentic life stories and highlight different perspectives through the characters I create.

The films you’ve made have been shot locally and used local talent, can you talk about why that is important to you?

I wanted to create art that my community could share in. I also wanted to reveal some hidden talent in this area, so I started my search here to find who was willing to align with the creative vision. Our community is full of real talent. I am blessed to have a platform to highlight our talent.

Is there another artist whose work you admire or inspires you?

I am mostly inspired by Tyler Perry. The trajectory of his career has been fascinating to watch. I have a great appreciation for his contributions to film and television.

Do you have any advice for artists just starting out or wanting to get into art?

My advice would be to find a mentor or someone you can learn from.

What artwork, award, or other artistic endeavor are you particularly proud of, and why?

I am most proud of having Crossover, a feature film, on TUBI TV. I am most proud of creating it in my community.

In one sentence, what is art to you?

Art, for me, is the creative expression and conveyance of the human experience.

Where can people find your work?

Currently, the first feature film, Crossover, can be found on TUBI network. The second feature film, Crossover: The Revenge, will be available on TUBI and other platforms upon its release. It is expected to be released by Summer 2023.
