The New Bern Historical Society introduces the Hallowed Ground Lantern Tour, an exciting new storytelling that combines intriguing New Bern history, the natural beauty of New Bern Battlefield Park, and talented local actors in one magical evening.

The tour is offered April 9 & 10 from 6-9 pm at New Bern Battlefield Park, site of the 1862 Battle of New Bern. The tour takes you on a 60-minute guided, lantern-lit walk through the wooded battlefield trails, where spirits from New Bern’s Civil War past will tell you their inspiring stories of courage and conviction.

Talented volunteer actors bring these colorful characters to life:

    • A plucky and daring female spy for the Confederacy

    • An adventure-seeking immigrant devoted to his new country

    • A naïve young farmer who matured overnight during the battle

    • A feisty female color bearer who became the Heroine of New Bern

    • A privileged local woman who found strength in adversity

    • Former slaves whose daring escapes led them to New Bern, the Mecca of Freedom

    • And more!

While you’re waiting for your tour, enjoy a look at military camp life by the reenactors from the 26th NC Infantry Regiment. End your evening with more wonderful stories and music in the tent. Total event time approximately 90 minutes.

Tickets: $15 for Historical Society members, children/students under 23, and active-duty military; $20 for non-member adults. Tickets are good for a specific day and arrival time of your choice.

New Bern Battlefield Park is located at 300 Battlefield Trail – just inside the entrance to Taberna subdivision.  The park is owned and managed by the New Bern Historical Society. Not recommended for those with difficulty walking or children under 7. For everyone’s safety, face masks are required, small tour groups and social distancing will be enforced. Rain dates April 16-17, only in event of heavy rain or storms.
