Sound Fitness, located at 3725-A Trent Road, right behind Harris Teeter, is a sparkling clean, beautifully decorated, remarkably inviting fitness facility. On first impression, this gym defies traditional stereotypes: no unpleasant odors, no offensive music, no overcrowding.  Instead, members enter the building and see cheerful tropical plants, fresh color schemes of grass green and sky blue, open spaces and spotless new equipment.

Locally owned by Brooke White, Sound Fitness aspires to create a lifestyle of wellness for its members, connecting the health of the mind and the body through quality classes, training, and nutritional support. One of the nicest benefits of membership at this particular facility is that members have 24/7 access. For individuals with schedules that require them to exercise very early in the morning or very late in evening, this flexibility is especially appealing.

Of course, the gym offers a wide variety of cardiovascular equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, as well as free weights, and less conventional equipment like the Pilates reformer. Additionally, group fitness areas offer spinning, yoga, body pump, les mills tone, cardio strength fusion, and more. For members interested in participating in small group training, a personal trainer is provided to a class no larger than six people—which is less expensive than private personal training, but more personalized than traditional group fitness classes. Saturday classes alternate based on instructor availability.  For more information on classes and personal training opportunities, check out the online portal at soundfit.net.

Owner Brooke White moved to New Bern in 2014, when she and her husband had tired of the cold in Wisconsin and purchased Sound Fitness at its old location in James City in March 2015. Just when the business was hitting its stride, Hurricane Florence arrived and caused irreparable damage to the facility. “We lost the roof and it rained inside facility for 5 days, so the ceiling fell in. The building was destroyed, and the exercise equipment sustained significant damage,” says Brooke. “We found a new location, and after a year of rebuilding, opened our new location in January 2020—and then Covid hit, and we were shut down again. It was devastating, but we eventually had a soft opening in June offering personal training, while following covid protocols, and officially opened again Sept 2020.  Somehow, we made it through all of this with the help of many dear friends and members, and now we are thriving. I would encourage anyone interested in improving their wellness through functional movement and better nutrition to come check us out. We can help with your fitness and nutritional goals!”
