Sweet Peas Café, located at 3515 Trent Road behind Harris Teeter in the Village Square Plaza is a spacious and super-friendly café offering a wide-variety of delightful items. The atmosphere feels like a spacious Italian kitchen, filled with savory comfort foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The café has plenty of tables and an efficient, bustling staff, and the kitchen is sparkling clean. Nearly everything in this tempting café is made in-house from scratch, including the bakery, coffee shop, sandwiches and soups, quiches, an entire case of entrée meals including pastas and giant stuffed meatballs, lasagna made with homemade pasta, pot pies, crab cakes, fresh salads and a marvelous display of take-and-bake dinners.
Owner Karen Miller learned to cook from her parents, who owned delis in Long Island, and her grandparents, who taught her to roll meatballs, make pasta, and use fresh ingredients from the garden in every meal. While living in New York, Karen previously owned a catering and event planning company, but 6 years ago she moved to New Bern and started Sweet Peas Café on Middle Street. But she missed catering, so she moved her business to Kinson to gain a larger space, and waited for the perfect location to come available in New Bern. Now she has been at her Trent Road establishment for two years and has the best of both worlds with the café and catering company, The Posh Palate.
“Catering is my first love and my passion,” says Karen. “I particularly enjoy making starters and themed stations.” Client favorites are her brie with raspberry drizzle, chicken quesadilla in guacamole flower pots, prosciutto wrapped chicken, and themed stations like sushi, carving stations and the Tuscan table.
