Pet:  Ellie Mae
Owner:  Holly Prafke

In the streets of New Bern, North Carolina, a small dog named Ellie Mae has become a familiar and welcome sight. Ellie is a 9-pound Jack Russell Terrier mix, born around February 2016, with a story that shows how kindness can change lives.

Ellie was about 5 weeks old when she and her brother were found abandoned at a dog park in Rocky Mount. It was a difficult start, but being in a public spot meant people noticed and helped. Her owner discovered her online through the Jack Russell Rescue and drove to Rocky Mount to adopt her. “As soon as she stepped out of her cage and onto my shoulder, I knew she was special,” her owner recalls. From that day, Ellie became a loving companion, always seeking attention from those around her.

At 9 pounds, Ellie is smart and responsive. She trained with Sally Said So trainers, quickly learning cues and commands. She started as an emotional support dog, and her skills led her owner to pursue therapy certification. They met Mary and Bob at Cedar Grove Cemetery, who connected them with New Bern Therapy Dogs. Ellie tested at Union Point Park, a place she walks daily, and passed easily, even showing a few tricks.

Now, Ellie stays active in New Bern. She joins her owner at Poor Charlies Flea Market and Antiques, where she greets customers and once sat in musician Howard’s guitar case. On weekdays, she walks around town and visits assisted living homes like the Viridian, where residents enjoy her company. She attends art walks and outdoor seating at restaurants. At local bars, she drinks her water “neat” from a plastic cup.

Ellie’s therapy work touches many lives. She offers quiet comfort to those in need, and her owner notes, “Ellie Mae has a real impact on people—she loves them and thrives on the connection.”

From an abandoned puppy to a certified therapy dog, Ellie shows the value of patience and care. In welcoming New Bern, she fits in naturally, bringing a bit of comfort to the community one visit at a time. Holly says it simply: “She’s not just my dog; she’s a source of joy for others.”
