In the heart of New Bern, North Carolina, where history echoes through the trails of Battlefield Park, a new tradition is taking root—one that combines the city’s rich past with a passion for its four-legged residents. Inspired by curious guests at the New Bern Historical Society’s (NBHS) annual Lantern Tour, who asked if they could bring their dogs along for the skits and strolls, the society has partnered with local animal advocates to launch “Paws on the Battlefield.” This inaugural dog expo isn’t just a fun day out; it’s a vital fundraiser for the Friends of Craven County Sheriff’s Office (FOCCSO), supporting Animal Protective Services and the Sheriff’s K-9 unit. Picture a vibrant gathering of wagging tails, live music, and community spirit—all set against the backdrop of a historic battlefield turned pet paradise.

“The New Bern Historical Society is pleased to make the New Bern Battlefield Park available in support of the partner nonprofit event ‘Paws on the Battlefield,’” says Executive Director of New Bern Historical Society, Anthony Giardino. “Sharing this historic landscape with our community—especially with the many dog lovers who enjoy the park—is an important part of our mission to connect people with the area’s Civil War history. By opening the battlefield for events like this, we honor the past while also ensuring that this meaningful place continues to serve the community today. Working together with partner organizations allows us to support local needs, encourage stewardship of the battlefield, and welcome new audiences to learn about and appreciate the history preserved here.”

It’s the perfect blend of history, community, and canine camaraderie, with all proceeds benefiting FOCCSO’s mission.

    The Spark of an Idea

The concept for “Paws on the Battlefield” emerged organically from Lantern Tour inquiries. “People love sharing experiences with their pets,” says Holly Prafke, President of FOCCSO. “We saw an opportunity to turn that enthusiasm into something meaningful.” Slated to become an annual event, the expo will expand each year, offering a platform for businesses, organizations, and services dedicated to dogs. Attendees can expect a lively mix of entertainment, making it a true celebration of Craven County’s canine companions.

But the event is more than tail-wagging fun—it’s a lifeline for two essential programs. Proceeds will fund veterinary care, equipment, and rescues through FOCCSO, ensuring that stray and abused animals find safe homes while K-9 officers get the gear they need to protect the community.

Roots of FOCCSO: A Story of Dedication

FOCCSO’s story began in 2019, born from a pressing need in Craven County. That year, Sergeant R. Hooper, under the leadership of Sheriff Hughes, launched the Sheriff’s K-9 program to enhance law enforcement capabilities. However, the county budget couldn’t cover everything—from specialized training gear for the dogs to veterinary bills for rescued animals handled by Animal Protective Services (APS), which operates under the Sheriff’s Office.

Enter a group of passionate locals who formed FOCCSO as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. With six founding board members at the helm, the organization stepped in to bridge the gaps. Today, the board includes dedicated individuals like Steve Stelma, DVM; Sergeant R. Hooper, a K-9 handler; Amanda Schmitz, APS Director; Tim Colantoni, Treasurer; Shelia Hardesty; Orion Irizarry; Charlie Schmidt; and Holly as President. “We’re a team,” emphasizes Holly. “I’m only the lead in name—it takes volunteers, friends, and families working behind the scenes to make this happen.”

The board’s passion for animals drives everything. “We turn potential tragedies into triumphs,” says Holly. “Our hands-on approach ensures practical outcomes, like fewer euthanizations, more adoptions, and safer K-9 deployments.” In just six years, FOCCSO has grown from a fledgling group into a community cornerstone, fueled by donors and volunteers who provide time, expertise, and resources.

Mission in Action: Saving Lives and Serving the Community

At its core, FOCCSO has a twofold mission: to raise awareness and funds for animal welfare and law enforcement’s K-9 heroes. The organization supports APS in rescuing stray, abused, and abandoned animals, covering costs for vet bills, boarding, and care to get them off dangerous streets and into loving homes. Simultaneously, it funds the purchase of K-9 dogs, their training, and essential gear—ensuring these four-legged officers can apprehend criminals, locate missing children, and perform other life-saving duties.

“Our work strengthens the fabric of Craven County,” notes Holly. By partnering with FOCCSO, the community invests in proactive animal welfare that prevents crises and fosters harmony between residents, pets, and law enforcement. Public support directly translates to measurable impacts: safer streets, happier animals, and a more united community.

FOCCSO’s fundraising efforts have included small carnivals, “Dunk a Doc” events, T-shirt sales at local festivals like Mum Fest, and participation in community gatherings. APS complements this with vaccination clinics and adoption drives. Now, “Paws on the Battlefield” aims to be the organization’s flagship annual event, drawing larger crowds and bigger donations to sustain these vital services.

A Tail of Triumph: The Story of K-9 Vex

One of FOCCSO’s most inspiring success stories is that of K-9 Vex, a Belgian Malinois rescued from an animal cruelty case. Once facing an uncertain future, Vex was rehabilitated through APS and is now in training to serve and protect Craven County. “Vex represents everything we stand for,” shares Holly. “From rescue to hero—it’s a reminder of what community support can achieve.” Attendees at the inaugural “Paws on the Battlefield” will get to meet Vex in person during the K-9 demonstration, witnessing firsthand the impact of FOCCSO’s work.
